In the last part of our series on heart health, we’re looking at the benefit of consuming fish oil for cardiovascular health. This is probably one of the most well-known conditions that fish oil treats, and that too, for good reason.
Fish oils are very high in omega-3 fatty acids, and these acids have direct links to reducing cardiovascular diseases. Fish in general is great for anyone with heart disease tendencies, or for those who wish to regulate and keep their heart healthy. Oils are an easy, natural solution in helping maintain a healthy heart, as it may not always be possible to consume fish on a daily basis. Also, for those with dietary restrictions, fish oils are a great alternative.
Omega-3 is known to reduce levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) present in the body, while simultaneously increasing the good levels of cholesterol (HDL). Part of the reason people suffer from cardiovascular diseases is due to triglycerides. Fish oil prevents the accumulation of triglycerides and also works to reduce the already present excess levels of triglycerides.
Studies have shown that fish oils work to prevent atherosclerosis in coronary patients. Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries whereby excess plaque from fatty foods gathers on the inner walls. Thus, fish oils are effective in reducing risk of stroke from occurring, and with regular intake of these oils, cardiac death risk can often times be reduced.
Taking fish oils regularly to maintain a healthy heart is in the best interest of everyone, not just those who are already at risk for cardiovascular disease. Keeping your cholesterol levels in check, and ensuring your fats are in balance is imperative for a long and heart disease free life.
