10 Reasons You're Tired All the Time

November 23, 2015

Tired all the time? Here are 10 possible reasons why.

Are you feeling tired? Do normal, everyday activities leave you feeling exhausted? You're not alone; tiredness is a leading medical complaint. Here are 10 reasons you might be tired all the time:

Anaemia

If ordinary tasks like brushing your teeth are exhausting, you might suffer from anaemia. It results from a lack of red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout your body. In simple cases, adding lean meat, shellfish, pulses, and iron-fortified cereals to your diet may suffice. Other cases may require iron supplements.

Caffeine Overload

Believe it or not, caffeine can actually cause fatigue in some people! If you're one of them, it might be best to stay away from tea, coffee,  chocolate, soft drinks, and certain OTC medications. Reduce your caffeine consumption gradually, because stopping too quickly can cause even more fatigue.

Dehydration

According to WebMD: "If you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated." Two other symptoms of dehydration are dark-coloured urine and tiredness. Drink enough water throughout your day to keep your urine almost clear.

Depression

Depression can interfere with sleep patterns and cause physical symptoms such as tiredness.

Disease

Medical conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), diabetes, heart disease, and underactive thyroid can all cause tiredness. Even something as simple as a urinary tract infection (UTI) can leave you feeling tired the next day. If you experience tiredness on a regular basis, it's a good idea to see your GP.

Food intolerance

Foods can cause you to feel sleepy if you are intolerant to them. Try to notice what you ate before getting sleepy and eliminate that food from your diet to see if your tiredness improves. Your GP could help with a supervised elimination diet.

Lack of sleep

If you've been burning the midnight oil, you won't be properly rested the next day. Using electronic devices in bed can also interfere with your sleep-wake cycle because of their bright light.

Not enough exercise

Skipping exercise because you're tired will actually make you even more tired. Instead, try a brisk 20 minute walk. You'll be surprised at how refreshed and energised you'll feel! Try to exercise for 20 minutes three times per week.

Skipping breakfast

Food is the fuel for our bodies. If you're starving your body, you can't expect it to keep running. It's more likely it will run down! Always refuel your body each morning with a healthy breakfast. A meal rich in protein and complex carbohydrates will keep you well-fueled for the busy day ahead. Try eggs with wholemeal toast and a piece of fruit for steady energy all day. Adding a good multivitamin specially formulated for men or women can't hurt, either!

Sleep apnea

You might be sleeping enough hours, yet still not get enough sleep if you suffer from sleep apnea. This condition causes you to awaken briefly many times per night. These repeated interruptions result in sleep deprivation despite lying in bed all night.
